Russian fans in balaclavas attack England supporters in stands at final whistle after Euro 2016 draw
Russian thugs in balaclavas attackedEngland fans in the stadium at final whistle tonight.
It came moments after Russia stunned England by scoring an injury-time equaliser to force a 1-1 draw in the sides' opening Euro 2016 game.
Women and children were apparently been trampled by Russian supporters as they pushed across into the England section of the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.
Panicking England fans were seen to be climbing fences to get out of the way of the Russian assault.
According to French reports, Russian fans have been kept inside the stadium to avoid further trouble outside.
Witnesses inside the stadium claimed Russian supporters managed to smuggle a firework past security. Many also reported there were no police to be seen in the stands.
The BBC's Nick Eardley wrote on Twitter: "Have never seen anything like this in football stadium. Utter panic in England as some Russians charged. Women and children trampled.
"England fans (and many French people too) climbing fences to avoid Russian supporters."
Carnage erupted in the city’s ancient port as a group of up to 30 masked Russians in black T-shirts charged England fans drinking outside bars as the French National Guard waited on standby behind shields.
Amid ugly scenes, the English fans retaliated and threw chairs back and green bottles of Heineken at the hooligans from Lokomotiv Moscow and riot oficers - before two rival fans squared up to one another.
Officers fired tear gas canisters into the riot in an attempt to disperse the gangs before a running battle continued in the narrow streets leading out of the marina.
Five people have been injured and six arrests made after violence broke out and fans fought running battles in the streets.
